Mind controlled robotic arm

Love it or Leave it / May 13, 2010 / By Andrew

Mind controlled robotic arm

Technology has taken us so far already, but it seems we just took another huge leap ahead of our time. BBC reports on a 5 year project that has just been concluded as a success for a 21 year old Austrain that lost both his arms after being electricuted by 20,000 volts. Christian has two prostatic arms, one of which is now controlled by his mind. The doctors at the medical technology company, Otto Bock healthcare, have developed this mind-controlled arm and have declared it the first project of its kind in Europe. Dr Hubert Egger head of the research and development project for the mind-controlled arm says ”Christian is the first patient in Europe where this surgery was done, and the first person in Europe with this mind-controlled prosthetic. In the future we hope to fit patients in the UK with prosthetics like this." How is this done you ask? Well the project involves a new technique known as targeted muscle reinnervation (TMR), where nerves that once controlled a lost limb are used to control a prosthesis. Christan is now driving his car each day and for the first time since he lost both of his arms he can control his right limb and do simple things like help himself out of bed. This is a true break through and I for one am thrilled this kind of technology is now available to people that just want to do the things we take for granted each day.

Your baby can read works

Baby Boggle / May 13, 2010 / By Andrew

Parents everywhere can agree on one thing, we all want the best for our children. With this in mind I would like to tell you about our experience with “Your baby can read." This is a set of four videos and flash cards that introduce a word structure to your infant that is then related to a person, action, picture or sound. This idea is so interesting as it brings this world of words into your child’s life. Would I say it actually teaches them how to read? Yes I would. There is a relationship between words, objects and pictures and “Your baby can read” brings this relationship into your child’s world. It’s kind of early to tell the full scope of what this educational entertainment has brought into our sons world, as he started when he was 4 and a half months and now he is 10 months. The media is for the age of 3 months to 5 years so there is a lot of learning to go. Even so, there are a lot of clear aspects of my sons character that I attribute to Your baby can read. For example, he sees the word "point" on the TV and he points. That's the only word so far that he can "read," but he comprehends word association to eye, finger, nose, flowers, babies, he loves books and will hapilly point to one to tell you he wants you to read to him. The relationship to words has been introduced to our son, and I feel this is a positive path for any child to go down. See the below link for more parents opinions on this fine product. They seem to agree for the most part that this product is positive to the growth of their child.

How to Clean the oiled birds

Lifestyle / May 13, 2010 / By Andrew

Now that we have this oil pumping into the ocean over the Gulf of Mexico there will be a major cleanup that needs to take place to preserve life affected by this disaster. The birds for one live off-shore and use the ocean for survival and with the lurking stream of oil basically on their bed and in their dinner plate it would be an understatement to say they have a real problem. I came across this article by Popular Mechanics that goes step by step into the procedure needed to clean these poor creatures. It brings you through the needed cycle to bring these birds out of the black poison that runs through their feathers and puts them in deaths path. BP (British Petroleum) has hired a Tri-State Bird Rescue to coordinate the bird rehabilitation efforts. They are working with the International Bird Rescue Research Center (IBRRC) and a number of other groups to save as many birds as possible at locations in Louisiana, Alabama and Florida as the spill moves closer to shore. Unfortunately there is no way determine just how much damage has been done or will add up when this is over, but these brave volunteers are doing all they can to ensure survival for these animals caught in the middle of this mess.

Artist of the decade

Entertainment / May 12, 2010 / By Andrew

There has been a lot of music over the last decade. Some great, some not so great, but one thing has always been consistent. Eminem has sold 32,000,000 in the 2000’s and has been named artist of the decade. I must say that number of albums sold and the award is not a surprise. His talent has carried him through substance abuse, a horrible loss of a friend (Proof)  and of course the publicized break up with is wife Kim. The amount of albums sold are more then 50,Kanye,jay-z and Litl’ Wane combined.

We have been exposed to the good the bad and the ugly with Eminem’s tracks but the talent has always shined through to entertain us all. It seems like just yesterday I was rocking out to the “Marshal Mathers LP”in 2000 and today I find myself extremely excited to hear his new album due out July 22 called “Recovery”. Eminem has a unique ability to make his talents look easy, but flow is the most unique and complex as any artist out to date. Below are some of my favorite tracks over the years starting with his new single “not afraid”… Enjoy!

Xbox Project Natal

Technology / May 11, 2010 / By Andrew

Something all fans of technology can appreciate is Xbox’s new take on the wii style controller without the actual controller. Xbox project Natal is the future of all living rooms if you ask this gamer, turned commuter tech, turned project manager(me). If you don’t know of, or understand its possibilities let me explain in more detail. If you watch the video below you will find the demo includes the ability to use your whole body as one life size controller. No need for a physical device in hand, when you can simply move your hand in the direction of its visual eye that rests on top of the TV. This will pick up all movement that you engage in, and translate this into videogame interaction. There's more. Let’s say you want to change the channel or change the movie you’re watching. Well this project Natal will use hand gestures to control the TV and negate the need for a remote control. It can be used as a media center extender to watch all movies of video off your pc. Any way you look at this revolutionary technology I believe in the end it will be positive and exciting. I for one currently do not won an Xbox but I think I may just go out and get one just to get my hands on this new way of gaming. Microsoft has confirmed project Natal will be out as early as October for a big push during Christmas time. Save your money guys and gals this will be big!

UPDATE: Man who claims he has not eaten or drank anything has amazed a team of doctors

Off the Wall / May 11, 2010 / By Theresa

So apparently this guy that claims he has not had food or water in 70 years still has not eaten, drank anything, or even gone to the bathroom. Lucky bastard! Imagine all that extra time and money we would save. No more grocery shopping, cooking or deciding what we want to eat. Not ever having to go to the bathroom would be pretty awsome too. I love food and all but if it wasn't mandatory that would be cool. Anyway, Prahlad Jani, 83, was put under 24-hour-a-day military medical surveillance for two weeks. We still do not know how he survives," said neurologist Sudhir Shah. "It is still a mystery what kind of phenomenon this is. If Jani does not derive energy from food and water, he must be doing that from energy sources around him, sunlight being one. As medical practitioners, we cannot shut our eyes to possibilities, to a source of energy other than calories." Jani has since been released and sent back to his village after leaving the hospital where he says he will continue his yoga and meditation routine. That's odd. I know if I was a scientist or whatever and I had a medical phenomenon in my hospital I would have liked to figure out how long this would last, and how the heck this was even happening. Hmmmmm.

A memorial to an icon that needs your support

Lifestyle / May 10, 2010 / By Andrew

Since the beginning of Shareboggle we have opened our site up to the fans so you can share your ideas, beliefs, inspirations, or just tell us something interesting. With that, it’s my pleasure to share some information provided by Lowell Depsey from buildthedream.org. He reached out to us about their website mlkmemorialnews.org where they are commemorating the life and work of Dr. King by creating a memorial in our nation's capital. The Washington DC Martin Luther King Jr National Memorial, will honor his life and contributions to the world through non-violent social change. Lowell says after years of fund raising, the memorial is now $14 million away from its $120 million goal, and that your visit to his site to learn and contribute would be greatly appreciated. Lowell says ”This will be more than a monument to a great humanitarian, the National Memorial will be a place for visitors from around the world to share the spirit of love, freedom, and peace.” It’s my pleasure to post this information and encourage the Shareboggle community to give it a look and if you like what you see, share it with a friend. Shareboggle has also done a piece on Martin Luther King, Jr under our profound thoughts category. Check it out and see some of his greatest quotes and thoughts.

GROM

Secrets of New York / May 10, 2010 / By Theresa

If you like gelato, ice cream, and or frozen yogurt, you need to do your taste buds a favor and experience GROM. All ingredients are fresh from Italy and central America. The gelato is then mixed on site. Per GROM, "The standards are strict: only fresh seasonal fruit, coming from the best consortia in Italy and from our farm Mura Mura no colorings or artificial additives, Lurisia mountain water for the sorbets and high-quality whole milk for the creams, organic eggs and a selection of the best cocoas and coffees from central America." My husband always gets the extra large "Crema de Grom." It is some sort of yummy cream with Battifollo biscuits and Teyuna chocolate chips, minus the fancy lingo for biscuit and chocolate it really is delectable. Personally, I think all the flavors are yummy. The flavor of each gelato is so authentic. The pistachio tastes like the nut. The fruit sorbets are so fresh and yummy The vanilla is amazingly creamy and delicious. The chocolate is bitter like actual ccocoa. The caramel literally tastes like candy. The flavors all taste like what they describe so it may not be what you expect if you're used to the other stuff like Haagen Dazs or Baskin and Robbins. The downside is it's extremely pricey. For the two of us, my husband getting an extra large and me getting a medium it comes out to about $15. But hey, premium prices for total taste bud satisfaction. So worth it. A brief history on how the "Weekend" came about. Happy Friday!

Lifestyle / May 7, 2010 / By Theresa

Happy happy joy joy...It's Friday...wooohooo! Just wanted to share a brief history of how my two favorite days came about, and who we need to thank for the glorious days we call the weekend. While the idea of a non working Sunday goes back to biblical times, the "7th day of rest," the idea of two non working days at the end of every week isn't very old. It wasn't until 1940 that the two-day weekend officially began nationwide. Referencing the book "Waiting for the Weekend"  by Witold Rybczynski, the American concept of the weekend rooted from labor union attempts to accommodate Jewish workers who took Saturday instead of Sunday as their Sabbath. We also need to credit people who owned factories. These people brought on the first five-day work week. People like Henry Ford. Christian Overland of the Henry Ford museum explains "Ford wanted to sell his Model T. And if people were stuck in factories all week, when are they going to use it? If your workforce is your consumer, you have to give people the time off to buy the things." Thank you Henry Ford for revolutionizing transportation, the American industry and most importantly paving the path for our two sacred rest days. Good stuff! So in summary the weekend was brought to you by the Labor Movement, Management, and the Jews and Gentiles. Since the bible also puts in place the "day of rest," we can also thank God. Have a great weekend.

Betty White...We love you!

Entertainment / May 7, 2010 / By Andrew

There have been many sitcoms over the years, some of them even today bring back good memories of family and good times. For a guy raised by his grandma (me), it makes sense to have watched the “Golden Girls” . We spent many afternoons sitting down together watching the trio of girls getting into trouble and showing you they still got it, while having you cracking up the whole time. Now that my grandma has passed and I’m now a parent it’s such an unbelievable pleasure to see Betty White now blowing up again. Betty was one of the Golden Girls, and today she is 88 and still going strong. She is such spirit, and to date she is still as entertaining and interesting as always. This weekend she will be hosting Saturday night live and I am ecstatic. This is a salute to an actress, comedian, family friend, and Hollywood icon. Betty white … You go girl!

Peter Luger

Secrets of New York / May 5, 2010 / By Andrew

The best way to celebrate anything in my opinion is a good meal, and if you’re in Brooklyn or long island I got just the place. Peter Luger Steakhouse is a place that will change your taste buds forever. The few times I’ve visited this wonderful restaurant I was not just blown away by the meal and how much I ate but how I craved it in the months that followed. To be honest, I still crave that Peter Luger steak with potatoes and spinach. One small problem is the price, it’s around a hundred and forty dollars for two, and that’s without tip or drinks. This is if you have an appetizer or two and get a steak for two with two sides. I would have to recommend you go for the whole experience as it’s worth every penny. My favorite aspect of the restaurant is the steak sauce that you can get in select supermarkets in NYC. My wife and I use it to marinate basically all our meats, it adds a tangy sweet taste. In the near future I hope you’re lucky enough to go out for a steak dinner with your friends and or family at this treasure in New York. For the full breakdown of Peter Luger’s and their story check out their website here

Very Young Girls

Lifestyle / May 4, 2010 / By Theresa

After having a sad but insightful conversation with a good friend of mine, a social worker that dedicates her career to helping the less fortunate, she advised me to watch this documentary/movie about the explosion of human trafficking in the U.S. Very Young Girls  is heartbreaking and hard to watch but extremely powerful. It rawly depicts underage prostitution in the United States and how these girls became tangled in a web of betrayal and lies. Watching these young women abused by their pimps, who recorded their crimes was difficult to fathom. These girls were dehumanized and robbed of every last bit of self-respect. Again, this was very hard to watch but enlightening to the fact that this is actually going on next door. With all the negative this film shows, we also see the efforts of NYC outreach worker Rachel Lloyd, who herself was exploited as a teenage prostitute. Born in England but emigrated to the United States, Lloyd founded GEMS (Girls Educational and Mentoring Services). It is an organization dedicated to helping these girls break away from a lifestyle that is under constant threat by providing them with housing, education and means for finding employment. GEMS is a truly amazing organization that is making a difference one step at a time. Hopefully we too can help make a difference and do what we can to stop these heinous crimes from happening. Rear-vision motorcycle helmet released

Love it or Leave it / May 4, 2010 / By Theresa

Check out the Reevu helmet, a motorcycle helmet that has a built-in rear view mirror. Reevu claims that this is the "world's first motor-sport helmet with a built-in unbreakable rear-view mirror system". When the hubby had his bike back in the day and we would ride, very uncomfortable might I add, I always wished he could see more of what was going on behind him. Would have made me feel safer. So, when I stumbled upon this I thought it was an excellent idea. It appears that Reevu has finally announced that its RV MSX1 helmet has passed European standards testing, and is now available for distribution. It should be available for use worldwide in the near future. Reevu expects this hand made helmet to retail at circa $399, putting it in the mid-price bracket when compared with the traditional helmets currently available. I likes!

The Better Marriage blanket

Love it or Leave it / May 3, 2010 / By Theresa

Have a problem farting? Well this product was invented to solve the effects of flatulence when in bed with your loved one. I kid you not when I introduce you to The Better Marriage Blanket . It is made using the same kind of activated carbon fabric found in Military Chemical Suits. I guess this comes in handy when your husband, or wife, drops that really horrid stink bomb where you think he may just have had an accident. I know, gross, but I didn't invent this thing and I'm trying to justify why someone would. I dunno folks, seems like the inventor of this fine product is jumping on the Snuggie and Siamese Slanket bandwagon. Oh, and by the way it's not a joke. Called the 1800 number and it's really for sale.

Man claims he has not eaten or drank anything in 70 years

Off the Wall / May 3, 2010 / By Theresa

Here are the facts, scientists are conducting a series of tests on an man who says he has not had any food or drink in 70 years. He is an 82-year-old Indian man named Prahlad Jani. He claims he is being sustained by the "elixir" of a goddess. So far Jani has spent six days under observation without food or water and doctors say his body is not yet showing the signs of hunger or dehydration as expected. Hmmmm, that's odd. "If his claims are verified, it will be a breakthrough in medical science," said Dr. G Ilavazhagan. Doctors will continue studying him for 15 days. At this time with no food or water "your body will start to break down muscle, eventually attacking the heart muscles needed to provide energy to the brain until ultimately you have a heart attack and you die," (that was pleasant)said leading Australian nutritionist, Dr Joanna McMillan Price, who says the study is a dangerous and pointless exercise.

24 rooms in 344 square feet. See how...

Check out this modern architectural marvel. Architect Gary Chang, designer of the "Domestic Transformer," showcases how he converted his tiny apartment into 24 different rooms. Gary says, "The house transforms and I'm always here. I don't move. The house moves for me." This is amazing and I love the concept, but an ingeniously furnished shoebox is still a shoebox nonetheless. Perfect for New York City apartments though.

Bodybuilding for kids?

Off the Wall / April 30, 2010 / By Theresa

Check out this mind boggle of the day. Giuliano Stroe, a 5-year-old boy from Romania, was entered into the Guinness World Records after performing some impressive 'hand-walking' skills to a panel of judges. The pre-schooler performed the fastest 10m hand walk with a weight ball between his legs. Apparently this kid has been training since he was 2 in Italy where he and his famly lives. “He has been going to the gym with me ever since he was born. I always took him with me when I went training,” said the boy’s father, Iulian Stroe, 33. This is so crazy to me. There's just something really wrong about this. In my opinion a 5 year old should be playing with GI Joe's or whatever, not taking on a body building regimen, but that's me.

A Movie for parents everywhere

Entertainment / April 29, 2010 / By Andrew

The idea of reality TV has developed into many ideas and worthless shows that allow us to watch people who are acting their own lives out. Does this make sense to anyone? because it doesn’t to me. How can you call that reality TV? The people maybe living their own lives, but they are acting. There is no way to hide it, and we as viewers don’t care, we watch it and buy into the idea as entertainment. Though to me it's foolish, I still find myself interested in overall concept. Now what if you could find actors that are not acting, because they can’t? They can only be themselves and show you the viewer, a true depiction of their life without a filter. What if we could watch four lives starting from the day of birth and concluding after their first birthday? We can in the new movie coming out from focus films called “BABIES”. There is a buzz going on about this film and I feel the hype will be fulfilled with a great entertainment experience. The critics are already raving about this captivating idea of life in full development. As a parent I can tell you that there is no greater journey than to watch your kin find their way through this word with only you as their teacher. We will get to take this journey with four families from different parts of the world. Read they synopsis below and I hope you get the privilege of catching this true depiction of reality.

Have your baby chew on this!

Baby Boggle / February 22, 2010 / By Charity

Sharebogglers, wut up! So I have been around and cared for babies my whole life and sort of pride myself on knowing all sorts of facts about them. However, there is one thing I seemed to overlook until Lucas. It's no new revelation that babies LOVE to chew on everything but what I did not recognize is how much they enjoy chewing on tags. Yes, tags! The satin little tags that hang off of toys, bibs, clothes...well everything. Sometimes I will hand the little man a toy and it might as well not be there at all because he goes straight for the tag. So I decided to do what every intelligent individual does when they need some info, I Googled it! In my search to figure out why these tags were like crack to him and if all babies took to the tags, I came across a line of products just for babies with the "tag addiction." The products are called Taggies. Basically they make anything you can think of for babies ( toys, cups, bibs ect.) and cover them (quite cleverly) with these satin tags. Some might cry "Unnecessary purchase!" but I say whatever makes the lil guy happy. They have everything from blankets to books. Ever tried reading to a baby and all he/she wants to do is eat the book, well now they can! Why I like this idea better than say just letting them chew on random tags is that these are made for this purpose and with the babies well being in mind. Here's the link so you decide, unnecessary purchase or baby bliss.
